John Dutton began musical studies with the piano at age 5. By age 8 he had realized something was not quite right and began studying the French Horn to remedy the situation. Within six years Mr. Dutton was in demand as a soloist in and around Topeka and won a position with the Topeka Symphony Orchestra in 1983. Mr. Dutton continued his studies of the horn with Nancy Cochran at the Conservatory of Music in Kansas City, Missouri where he was a member of the Conservatory Wind Quintet. During this time Mr. Dutton also had the privilege of participating in two International Horn Workshops. Following successful completion of a Bachelors of Music in Performance, attendance at Northwestern University in Chicago seemed in order. During his study at Northwestern, Mr. Dutton studied with Barry Benjamin and Dale Clevenger completing both a Masters in Music Performance and a Certificate of Performance. Of course this made him capable of nothing other than playing in orchestras and working at McDonalds. For three years Mr. Dutton was a member of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago. Additionally Mr. Dutton performed many times for the Chicago Civic Symphony’s chamber music series.
After three years of uproarious fun Mr. Dutton heeded Horace Greeley’s admonition and won an audition for 3rd horn with the Boise Philharmonic. Mr. Dutton performed for three years with that organization and then detoured slightly by joining the United States Marine Corps. Mr. Dutton performed with Marine Band San Diego from 1998-2002 and was active as soloist and clinician for the Marine Music Program and in fact visited Billings twice as part of those duties. In 2000 Mr. Dutton was honored with the first ever “Marine Musician of the Year” award and in 2002 received the Navy/Marine Corps Commendation Medal. Regaining his senses, Mr. Dutton left the Corps of Marines to visit the lands of the Corps of Discovery and came to Billings in 2003 after winning an audition for Principal Horn. Along his winding path, Mr. Dutton has performed under the baton of many of the great conductors including Sir George Solti, Daniel Barenboim, Claudio Abbado, Pierre Boulez, Mariss Jansons, Michael Tilson Thomas, Zubin Mehta, James DePriest, Lawrence Foster, and William McGlaughlin among others.
In his 'spare' moments, Mr. Dutton enjoys spending time in the great outdoors of Yellowstone where he manages a campground during the summer months which has absolutely ruined him for urban life. \@() \@() \@() -- ()@/ ()@/ ()@/
